21st February 2009 :: Concert by United Co-op Band and Silk Brass
After a successful concert last year Silk Brass were invited to join us again for our “pre- area” concert. The full house at Dane Bank theatre were invited to hear an hours concert by both bands including their respective test pieces New world sketches (Second section) and Salute to Youth (Championship section).
Silk Brass provided a very varied programme including the traditional march ORB and Out of Africa.
Andrew Snelson provided an excellent solo spot in the first half playing the trombone solo “Feelings”.
The performance of the test piece New world Sketches showed Silk Brass were going into the Derby contest the following day in excellent shape.
For the second half United Co-op Band opened with Valero a favourite of audiences all year.
Following Four Renaissance Dances a quieter more reflective mood was provided with the playing of a beatiful new arrangement from our composer in residence Mr Kevin Birch of the Prayer from Hansel and Gretal.
Annette Sparkes was in excellent form once more with the Tenor Horn solo “Evergreen”showing off her excellent sound throughout.
Salute to Youth has provided a test for everyone around the stand and the opportunity to run the piece fully was well and truly grasped and provided an exciting time for both the band and audience. Soloists showed they were well up to the task .The audience were very receptive to the performance and the experience of the performance will be invaluable in the run in to Blackpool.
“Music” was the finale to another excellent evening. Our thanks to Silk Brass and the excellent audience who I am sure were impressed with the standard of playing from both bands
