18th October 2008 :: Concert : United Co-op and Lions Youth Brass

Sandbach Boys School provided the venue for the second joint concert between The United Co-op Band (Crewe) and the Lions Youth Band organisation who are based at the school.
The evening got under way with the senior youth band playing a very entertaining programme, including music from the shows and a very fine tuba soloist who played “Monte’s Czardas”. The United Co-op Band (Crewe) provided a soloist for the first half, who was Sarah Sparkes on Flugel playing “ I don’t know how to love Him” from Jesus Christ Superstar without music and on top form.
The Lions organisation have three full size bands at beginner,junior and youth levels all of which had the crowd clapping for more, well done to all of the bands who performed so well.

The second half gave the United Co-op band (Crewe) the opportunity to show the excellent playing level they have now achieved and certainly entertained the audience with Valero, Aspects of Lloyd Webber, Donegal Bay – Soloist Nicholas Birch on Euphonium who played brilliantly and The Muppet show. Next we welcomed 14 year old Rory Rolfe from the Lions youth band to play “Sugar Blues”, what a great performer this young man is – surely a rising star for the future.
The United Co-op band (Crewe) played a great finale in John Miles “Music” where the entire band obviously enjoyed themselves bringing their set to an excellent close.

To end the evening both bands came together to play “Steel Skies” followed by “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The audience showed great appreciation and a good night was had by all. Thanks must go to Nigel Birch, MD of the Lions youth band for his contribution to the evenings event.

We all look forward to the opportunity to perform together in the future.
